I used the telephoto lens today for a change (ever since I got the 100mm f/2/8L that's been the lens of choice but I fancied a change, not that you really needed to know that or care but I'm the sharing sort so just try to bear with me when I ramble on like this) which enabled me to get closer to people without actually getting closer to people; any accusation that 300mm provides a great way to look at women in their summer-style clothing without them realising will be hotly but not convincingly denied. Despite the extra zoom power, this particular picture was taken of a woman sitting only about two metres away as she enjoyed her lunch and soaked up some rays from the sun. Abstract Seating

This is a shot of a curved, metal bench – one of many similar ones situated in and around the council car park very near to where I work – and I've always liked them, especially when the sun hits them just so. I've never sat on one so can't attest to any comfort factor. I'm not prepared to sit on one just to update you on the comfort level either; what sort of person do you think I am? Submitted for #LeadingLinesMonday curated by +Jakob Nilsson and +Pam Chalkley. Also submitted for #MetallicMonday , curated by +Thomas Raschbacher. And, just because you can never have too many themes in a photo (not strictly true; at seventeen it really is time to stop) it's also submitted for #MinistractMonday curated by +Tom McLaughlan. Two Pairs

I knew it was +Shoes Monday curated by +Laura Harding and +Olga Kafka today and I knew that taking photos of people's shoes (specifically women's shoes because men's are a bit samey) was a risky venture if one wants to avoid a lot of screaming and a battering sensation in the cranial area so I put the telephoto lens on for a change. At the end of a gloriously bright and warm lunchtime I had precisely no photos of shoes so here is a shot taken a couple of years ago instead featuring my wife (on the right) and her sister showing off their respective Jimmy Choos. Nadine Dorries: Woman Out Of Time

If you’ve heard anything about the Member of Parliament for Mid Bedfordshire on those there internets you might conclude that Nadine Dorries is a lying lunatic completely detached from reality and desperate to push forward the views of a small group of sub-moronic religious nutjobs still clinging to the hope of a return to the good old days of the Middle Ages using the only means they know how – lying, manipulating, ignoring, lying (again), bullying, distorting, and lying (they really like lying) – but it might surprise you to learn that she hasn’t always been a figure of deserved ridicule by anyone on the planet with four or more working brain cells: for seven minutes in 2007 Nadine Dorries did nothing too annoying! Happy times! Other than that, though, it’s widely known that when it comes to batshit crazy levels of insanity in the Conservative Party there’s an exponential curve that includes the Boris Johnson Zone of Hilarity at around the 80% mark and the Nadine Dorries Termination Point as the line bends around and approaches infinity. Some people might wonder how someone who’s just about smart enough to persuade people in whichever constituency she’s claiming she lives in these days to vote for her can also be so out of touch with how the world operates but the answer, if you do a little research, is quite straightforward; just as a blind person becomes more attuned to hearing when the sense of sight is deprived, so Dorries has become attuned to living for hundreds of years thanks to a massive deficiency in the sense of common. History throws up some interesting facts about the life of the surprisingly long-lived Nadine Dorries: From 1882 to 1887 Nadine Dorries was a member of the Amazing Twunts acrobatic troupe, touring Europe with the famous Dingbats Circus. It was during this period that Nadine met Hernando Nando (not related to the restaurant chain), the resident strong man. His resemblance to a fat Jesus was all the proof she needed that the end of the world was imminent and so she married him, hoping to curry favour during the end times she hoped were only a few weeks away. Nadine and Hernando had a child, Maria, and four years later Nadine caught up to the fact that her husband – now a professional wrestler who fought in Honduras under the name El Miraculo – was probably not about to lead a select few to heaven while the rest of the world burned. Nadine filed for divorce from Hernando, citing irreconcilable stalking as the grounds. Of Maria, from 1889 there was no record...

For #SquareSunday curated by +Matt Soave. Another photo taken in 2008 that I never processed or uploaded, and it wasn't hard to see why since the shot was 1/20s on a f/1.8 50mm; a little slow and a little full of blown-out highlights and super saturation in its original colour. However, I liked the composition when I just looked at it so I decided to see if I could salvage something to my satisfaction; it needed black and white treating and a serious crop to take out the unsaveable portions of the photo, and it's not perfect because there are still some areas devoid of decent information from which to recover but I'm quite happy with what I could retrieve from the original shot overall. As for the photo itself: I know it was taken in Beijing, and it's either outside a restaurant that we dined in on our first full night there or near a theatre where we watched some Chinese acrobats perform. Unfortunately, none of the photos taken around the same time as this give much of a clue. Google+: View post on...
