Unlocking The Bike

Unlocking The Bike

The sun and the warm weather that occasionally accompanies it made an appearance today and that led to an abundance of shorts, t-shirts, and people on bicycles. We picked a different spot in which to sit today at lunchtime, engage in the usual moaning about work, and fire off a few shots every now and then. Where we were sat – outside the cathedral – was beside a bicycle rack and this man taking a bit of time to unravel the lock on his bike (at least, I hope it was his) stood still long enough to get captured. Dear Sex Spambot

Dear Sex Spambot, Regarding your recent post on FriendFeed: There are two sexes: males and females. Males are one sex. Females are another sex. Male is a sex. Female is also a sex. I’m explaining all this because when you say you want to meet someone who is game for a really awesome, passionate sex you are effectively asking for a person who is game for a male, or game for a female. Arguably, it’s a valid sentence but I suspect that wasn’t your intention. The use of the indefinite article immediately limits your opportunities for sex spamming as Grammar Nazis will be put off by the assumed lack of intellectual stimulation that any encounter will provide. The verb “to have” is one of the most commonly used in the English language and, subsequently, conjugation of it is fairly well understood by every English speaker. In your second sentence you express a preference for guys (a plural form, you’ll note) but then use the third person singular conjugation of the verb (“has”); this mix of singular and plural terms has the effect of making you appear imbecilic. Sentences typically require a verb to make the most sense and your final one lacks this feature. “Checkout” is a noun; “check out” is what you really needed there. You’re really not doing the sex spambot business any favours with this basic grammatical error. You have a lovely...

My Nokia Lumia 800

Another shot (taken yesterday) for #SquareSunday curated by +Matt Soave, this time featuring a plethora of squares as it shows a square crop of my lovely Nokia Lumia 800 with its new cyan cover and my current choice of wallpaper, the lovely Olivia Wilde in her Tron outfit; the phone runs Windows Phone 7 so it's stylish square tiles all over the place when you're using it; and I photographed this in the bathroom with its square mosaic effect on the flooring as backdrop. No Parking

Had a little bit of a wander into town today so that my missus could pick up some new trainers and a new bag for work (both were falling apart) and so that we could grab the next few months' worth of assorted birthday and anniversary cards in one hit. We're organised like that. Okay, my wife's organised like that. I, of course, tagged along with camera in tow but decided to not get the camera out until after we'd picked up the bit and pieces we came out for as I didn't really want to be going in and out of shops with a dSLR in hand. This, however, turned out to be a mistake as all the interesting people and things I saw on the way down – buskers and the assorted lunatics they'd obviously released for the day from the asylum – were all noticeably absent on the way back once I was ready to shoot away. Curses! In fact, of the nearly two dozen shots I did take I only kept a couple; the street ones weren't that interesting (I don't think my heart was in it) and the graffiti ones I took just didn't look that good afterwards either. This picture, though, I quite liked for the lines and rule of thirds layout (I am a bit of a geometry fiend when it comes to photos) as well as the stark colours (this is not might be a black and white conversion). Disposable

I'd love to make up something pretentious describing the X shape of the woman's legs (a powerful symbol!) and contrasting the relatively expensive taste in leather jacket, boots, and handbag with the cheap, disposable cup of indeterminate liquid she's carrying. I'd further like to add a social commentary angle by comparing the camera's focus on her (and her focus ahead) with that of the out-of-focus elderly woman in the foreground who we barely notice and who, with her thick glasses, is about to wander out of view completely to one side. Unfortunately, I'm extremely bad at making up arty stuff on the spot so you'll just have to use your imagination and pretend I did, further consolidating your view that I have a fantastic eye for these thought-provoking compositions and am not simply a guy who stands around and takes throwaway shots of strangers at random.
