America – Part 2 – Massachusetts

America – Part 2 – Massachusetts

When we originally made plans to visit America it has to be admitted that no part of the Massachusetts area was on our radar at any point but then something rather nice happened. We discovered that my sister-in-law’s fiancĂ© supported the New England Patriots and he discovered that I too supported that particular American Football team. It gets better. He – perhaps wanting to make a good impression on future family members, perhaps looking for a good excuse to go himself – tracked down tickets to a Monday night football game. He also arranged for internal flights, hotel, and car hire. This saved us having to do any of this ourselves. And so it was that I, my wife, and my wife’s future brother-in-law (my wife’s sister had to work so couldn’t come along) flew from Baltimore to Boston just two days after arriving in America. Baltimore To Boston I’ve already talked about travelling in America in the first part of this series of posts but just to give you a quick feel for this flight: awful internal security measures as per every American airport and then a quick flight with a cabin crew from Atlanta, Georgia whose intercom skill level rated at a Grade S (for screech!); I’m not exaggerating when I say that everyone jumped every time there was an announcement of some description. Anyway, it was mercifully short. Some Booking Mishaps Now, I’d like to make it very clear here that we – that’s my wife and I – did not arrange anything. I’d like to point out that all minor disasters were not of our doing. I’d like to add that we blame nobody and had a great time anyway. From Boston airport we hopped on a shuttle bus (with a driver who overheard our accents and insisted we come sit up front with him) to the Budget car rental lot where our hire car was waiting. Our hire car was not waiting for us. Computer checks were made, names were spelt out, checks were made again, names were double-checked, and then – finally – the printout of the car hire confirmation was retrieved from a bag to show that, yes, we were in the wrong car hire place entirely. We hopped on another shuttle bus to take us back to the airport in order that we could then hop on a third shuttle bus to take us to the correct car rental location but the first driver heard our sorry story and let us off near where we needed to go (so big thumbs up to the car rental people at Budget in Boston)...

Brutalist Style

For the new Google+ theme of #SAturdayStyle curated by +lynn langmade and +lane langmade who I have a sneaky suspicion may be related to one another. You can read more about the theme's rules here – https://plus.google.com/113973458554656282296/posts/JX6rbasjLsH – but in a nutshell it's a theme that exposes style of some description; art, fashion, design, architecture, etc. I've gone with architecture for the inaugural post in this theme. This is a reworking in my own particular style of a photo I took almost a year ago in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and features my second favourite style of architecture, brutalism (my favourite being art deco like just about anyone with taste). From the 1950s to the 1970s brutalist architecture embraced the wonderful ideal of casting concrete into moulds to create repetitive, geometric buildings or, if you prefer, works of art (which, admittedly, some people think are gruesome but there's no accounting for taste). Bare Trees and Building

Couldn't quite get into shooting people yesterday so ended up going for a bit of a walk and trying to find some interesting things instead; sometimes, though, you just can't get a good shot no matter how hard you try. This was one of the few that I thought might have possibilities – the reflections in the glass and the high contrast on the trees thanks to the low, bright sun seemed quite striking at the time – but it turned out it had more potential in my head than anything I've been able to conjure up once I've taken a look at it properly. Oh well; just chalk that up to "one of those days". Google+: View post on...

A Couple With Coffees

First street shot in a little while thanks to this stupid cold, and Chichester is proving to be a bit of a pain for photographing at the moment on account of the roadworks taking place in the precinct (lifting up flagstones, replacing them, making sure the maintenance budget for the year is fully used so that it can get renewed, I'm not cynical). There was also the problem of dealing with some rather harsh light today and a chilly wind that sapped feeling from the fingers; that last part explained why this couple were walking through with coffees in hands, at least. For #ThirstyThursday (curated by +Mark Esguerra and +Giuseppe Basile) as well as #CoffeeThursday (curated by +Jason Kowing and +Cheryl Cooper). Google+: View post on...

Haute Couture Shoes

It’s been interesting looking through some of the shots coming out from the various haute couture shows at Paris Fashion Week recently and I noticed that the shoes in some sets were particularly interesting (my wife has trained me well in this respect). I don’t have any fetish where it comes to shoes and feet (in fact, the opposite of fetish would be closer to the mark) but that doesn’t mean I can’t produce an update for the site and cater for those perverted visitors who do. You’ve got to think of your target demographic. All images are sourced from fashionising.com; click the images to view large and see other photos from the runway collection. I’m not keen on the platform but the ankle clasp is nice. Lovely textures from the Georgio Armani haute couture set. I’m not a fan of the transparent, plastic sides anyway but this is also a very poorly-fitting shoe. I think that with Iris Van Herpen’s shoes we’ve finally found the footwear in which I’ll commit crimes and leave baffling prints at the...
