Charles Dickens Music Triple

Charles Dickens… music… triple? Did he write any music? No, no he didn’t. However, there’s a bit of a Dicken’s celebration taking place round about now and his birthplace, Portsmouth, just so happens to be mine too. More importantly than that, however, I could do with breaking up some of these photo posts with something different and you don’t get much more different than music videos with extremely tenuous links to the great author. Chuck Berry – Carol As in A Christmas Carol. Naturally. Paris – Rainy Day in London Can anyone say “A Tale Of Two Cities“? Thought I was quite clever here. No? Well, who asked you? Curiosity Shoppe Band – Raspberry Beret From Martin Chuzzlewit who liked eating raspberries and wearing berets. Honestly. Read...

Top Ten TV Sci-Fi Theme Tunes

Everyone loves a good top ten list. Or even a top ten list. There was a thread on Google+ amongst my circles recently that asked people what their favourite TV theme music of all time was and while I pondered my ponderings on the subject I realised – not terribly surprisingly, as it happens – that a lot of TV shows that I liked were of the science fiction genre. There were some that weren’t – and they’ll be good fodder for another update at some point – but there were enough that caused me to consider picking just my top ten favourite sci-fi TV show theme tunes and showcasing them to you in the form of videos. So here they are. #10: Star Trek Enterprise Now wait! I know, I know! There are a lot of people who don’t like this theme song. Actually, that needs some italicising: there are a lot of people who don’t like this theme song. I didn’t like it at first either. But it grew on me. It spoke to me. Think of it as a sentient fungus and what could be more science fiction than sentient fungus? Time-travelling sentient fungus, that’s what! But we’ll have to do without the temporal abilities for this music has none. Alternatively, if you want – if you really, really want – just consider this: I picked Dr Ruth Leavitt as my Hottest Sci-Fi Babe Ever; what were you expecting? #9: Mystery Science Theater 3000 Mystery Science Theater 3000 (or MST3K if you prefer) was a stranger to these British shores until the SyFy (then Sci-Fi) channel brought it across via the power of satellite broadcasting. Subsequently, it’s with Mike at the helm of the Satellite of Love and Pearl in control of choosing the awful movies that they would have to watch that I first became attached to this fantastic show and that’s why I’ve picked the intro music from season eight as one of my choices here. I’ve since gone on to watch nearly every episode from the early broadcasts on local American TV channel KTMA right through to its poignant conclusion; I grew to like Dr Forrester too, and TV’s Frank, but I could never associate with Joel. I just never really bought into the whole hippy janitor backstory. Hippy janitors! #8: Babylon 5 A good science fiction series with a well-defined story arc (the cycle of good versus evil in the universe set to the backdrop of security chief Michael Garibaldi’s receding hairline), good actors and actresses (and Mira Furlan), good cultures (especially the Centauri and their enormous appendages), occasionally ropey graphics rendering...

Blake’s 7 Triple

Hey! I’ve not updated this site in ages! I’ve been on holiday and, well, I took a lot of photos and, well, it’s going to take a while, okay? Anyway… here are some videos from classic science fiction TV series Blake’s 7. Why? I don’t know. Enjoy. Avon’s insults. Out-takes from series four. Servalan, Servalan, and more...

Bad Music Triple

Yep, I’m sharing a trio of music videos featuring bad music. Now, why would I do that? It’s possible that I hate you. Very possible. It’s possible that I fell over and hit my head. Less possible as I’m quite careful. It’s possible that I like this music even though – to me – it’s bad. Highly unlikely. But, as it turns out, true. These are songs that I shouldn’t like… but I do. Faith Evans – Mesmerized I loathe R’n’B music. Loathe it. And they’ve only gone and spelt ‘mesmerised’ in its American form. The cheek of it. Cracking song though. Girls Aloud – Love Machine I do not like Girls Aloud. I don’t fancy any of them. I would never buy any of their tracks. But I can sing along to this so long as nobody can see me. Heart – These Dreams Who likes power ballads? Not me, that’s for damn sure. But my fist will clench and my hair will become magically back-combed (in my mind) when this song enters my head...

Foreign Music Triple

You know what you want? You want some music videos sung in a foreign language; that’s what you want. Unless you’re not a native English-speaker. But, let’s assume that you are a native English-speaking individual… or hive mind (let’s not discriminate against my key hive mind demographic); you want some lilting, foreign tongue and tunes. You really do. Juana Molina – Quien If you only watch one of these videos then make it this one; stunning studio performance. Habibi – Aman Da Bey There are a couple of really, really, really nice things in this video. The range of outfits and the video transitions, of course. What did you think I meant? Karm – Tinka Tinka Zara Zara A beautiful song sung beautifully, and quite possibly inspired by Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Equally possibly...

College Music Triple

Three videos that have one thing in common is what this post is all about and that thing in common is: college. Specifically, music that I remember being popular or unpopular but played anyway while I was a college. If you went to college at the same time as me then maybe these can count as college music for you too, but it’s fairly likely that that’s not true at all. In that case feel free to come up with your own descriptive terms for this trio of musical delights all by yourself. Echo & The Bunnymen – Seven Seas Sugarcubes – Regina D Mob – Put Your Hands...
