Disabled Beggar
I have finally finished going through my photos from Spain; some fantastic memories brought back in doing it but it was hard work. And in addition to fantastic memories there were a few oh! moments too, case in point being the photo I'm sharing now; Barcelona is a truly lovely city but the sheer number of beggars was quite a shock. One of the problems with beggars is you never know if they're genuinely in desperate trouble or if what you're seeing is part of some scam (like the guy I saw with the placard saying he'd been robbed and needed money to get back home to the U.K.; sorry, but I've heard that story so many times before) so you become hardened to them, ignoring them, not wanting to make eye contact. When I saw this particular beggar sitting motionless in the shade of one of the wide alleys running off La Rambla in Barcelona I initially just thought his arms were clasped between his legs and I surreptitiously fired a shot as I approached since he didn't seem in any way to be aware of my presence; it was only as I passed that I glanced down and recognised his crippled state for what it really was. Definitely one of those oh! moments. Google+: View post on...
A Girl In Tarragona
To celebrate going through my photos of Tarragona now I've decided to inflict upon you one of the pictures from this particular place, that being of a girl walking past some buildings on a sloping road. Other people might have shared the images of the amphitheatre or the hippodrome or any of the other Roman buildings prevalent in the Catalonian city but with me you get a girl walking past some buildings on a sloping road. It's because I like you. A lot. The really good news is this means I can start on the Barcelona pictures next. Google+: View post on...
Church At The End Of The Street
I've reached day three of my Spain vacation photo processing marathon which featured a trip to Reus, home town of the madman/genius Gaudi, and wanted to prove it's not just colour, colour, colour in my photo stream at the moment. Look! Monochrome! Yay! And, since it fits the bill I'll tag this for both the #LeadingLinesMonday theme curated by +Pam Chalkley, +Jakob Nilsson, +CJ Sros, and +Michael Stuart and also for the #MonochromeMonday theme curated by +Hans Berendsen, +Manuel Votta, +Steve Barge, +Jerry Johnson, and +Charles Lupica. Blue And White
I swear I will get back to street shots soon – it's not as if I didn't take any last week, after all – but I'm one of those people who likes to go through the photos taken in the order in which they shot. You know: an oddball. So, still to come: some street shots from Chichester and shots of the Mayor's day celebrations in Abingdon from this weekend (I took a lot of pictures there too (surprise!)). But there are days of photos from Spain still to check out, discard, or approve first. This shot: on our first day in Salou my wife, my dad, and I went for a walk into town. My dad subsequently got the bus back which left my wife and I to walk the coastal trail around the numerous coves, cliffs, and beaches back to the hotel. This photo was taken on that trek back as we passed close to a house overlooking the sea; it was the strange tree that caught my attention though. Photo taken with my Tokina f/4 12-24mm lens which I hate and love in equal measures. I hate that its effective range is actually 17-24mm on my 5D Mk II (funky tunnel effects arise when wider than 17mm). However, the blues that it floods the sensor with on sunny days are just gorgeous. Other than a minor exposure tweak, a smidge of a crop, and some spot-cleaning (I'm suffering from filthy sensor disease (quite noticeable when the aperture's closed down) right now) this is pretty much straight out of the camera. The Photographer's Nephew
Still haven't had much time in the evenings to go through many of the photos from my recent Spain vacation but that hasn't stopped me heading out at lunchtimes this week and taking more anyway. This backlog is really quite backloggy. And it's not going to be helped by a day in Abingdon tomorrow following the various Morris sides around as they drink (with a little dancing thrown in for show). But I feel like I need to put something up so this is a shot from Cap Salou taken last week featuring a candid of my nephew Ché standing on some of the rocks that jut out into the Mediterranean there and form nice, sandy coves between them. Much swimming and leaping fun was had on those beaches but you can have too much of a good thing and it's been nice to be back in England this week with its grey skies, rain, and threats of gale force wind over the weekend. Keep telling yourself that, Mark. Keep repeating it. Google+: View post on...
I'm Not Dead
This is one of those "I am back from holiday and I didn't die" posts that you hear about in the movies. I am back from holiday and I didn't die. I have got a boatload of photos to sift through, though (*). And we are in the midst of the Euro 2012 tournament. And I will be away this coming weekend too. So, what I'm saying here is that updates may still be sporadic. I am back from holiday and I didn't die, however. So there is that. Anyway, here's one of the photos from my first day in Salou; a photo I'm calling Lady In Pink Shorts Outside A Mini Market for reasons that I'll warrant none can discern. (*) I didn't take as many photos as I'd wanted because a few days in I realised that I'd taken two cameras, two batteries for each, two chargers, but no actual charger cable. You might imagine that this realisation would have made me quite angry. And you would be quite right to imagine that. This did make me become a little more selective with shot-taking subsequently and that's not a terrible thing, though. Google+: View post on...
