They can serve a useful purpose especially where endangered species are concerned and there's a successful mating programme in operation but zoos are tainted with sadness. Do you ever see truly happy-looking inhabitants? No, you're far more likely to see an exhibition of depression, the beasts trapped behind iron or glass, locked into repeating the same motions day in, day out.
