Project 365 and Shenandoah
Happy New Year! Last year I engaged in one of those Project 365 thingies and managed to take at least one (and often many, many more than one) photo every single day… …right up until Christmas Day when I forgot. And I hadn't even drunk that much either. Anyway, needless to say but I went to bed a little annoyed that I'd missed out on the goal by about a week but Boxing Day brought a bit of a revelation to my head in the form of realising that the purposes of the project had been to try to find myself in my photography and improve my photo-taking ability somewhat and, as such, it had been a success: 2011 was the year I embraced street photography quite roughly and hugged it and squeezed it and called it George. There was also a great sense of relief in knowing I didn't have to take a photo every day any longer and subsequently the last week has been far more relaxing; I've still lugged my SlingShot bag around everywhere and I've still taken photos most days but the pressure to get something – anything – has gone and it's been good. And this leads us in no way whatsoever to some photos of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia because I still haven't finished going through all the pictures taken on our US trip in November yet and I like to add pretty things to posts. It was cold and windy when we visited through this tourist spot but we made sure to get out at each viewpoint, read the signs, take in the vista, and fire off some shots; this was in marked contrast to the majority of other tourists we encountered who drove up to the viewpoints, strained their necks to look around without leaving their vehicles or switching them off, and then drove off again. New York City, November 2011
I've finally completed going through the New York photos; thought the day would never come. This album contains a selection of the pictures taken during our short stay there in November. There's a mix of colour and black and white, processed and straight-out-of-camera, day and night; eclectic like the city itself. I've not included in this album photos that I've uploaded individually prior to today. For a street photographer New York is a wonderful place to visit and I'd love to go back for a longer stay at some point. My wife was less impressed with the place having expected to be bowled over by the shopping experiences and sights and failing to have those expectations met. Still, I loved it and am very jealous of photographers like +Leanne Staples and +John Frenzel who get to enjoy it and capture it on a regular basis. Anyway… with these out of the way I can now get on with enjoying Christmas Day the way I planned to: in the company of alcohol. Merry Christmas to anyone on Google+ today. The Lady In Red
A woman waiting to cross the road opposite on our last evening in New York. I thought with this shot that I had finally reached the end of going through and weeding the New York photos but taking a quick peek at the next day's lot of pictures has reminded me that we didn't leave until late morning of the following day and I may have snapped one or two (or a number greater than two) shots then as well. New York City Perfumes
I think I probably have one more evening's sifting through photos of New York to go and then I can catch up with the rest of the vacation plus all the photos I've taken since then. Still a while to go then. Woman On The Staten Island Ferry
We were given some good advice before we visited New York: one piece was that the Statue of Liberty was undergoing repairs so not to bother visiting it, and another was that a good way to see the statue itself was on the free-to-travel Staten Island Ferry. A lovely experience, as it happens, and – because I'm that way inclined – a good way to take photos of other people (typically other tourists) while they're distracted by the New York landmark. However, the particular woman in this shot was clearly a local, not at all concerned with the tall lady that others were interested in and apparently pondering what awaited her when the boat docked.
